Showforce bats for success at Women’s ICC T20 World Cup launch

Waterloo Bridge was transformed into a cricket pitch as the captains of the Women’s ICC T20 World Cup gathered in central London for a spectacular launch event.

The iconic bridge was closed to traffic as part of the Captains’ Carnival, with a strip of grass laid across the crossing to create a unique setting for the 12 team captains ahead of the tournament’s opening match.

Showforce was on hand to deliver crewing support for the high-profile activation, delivered by People. They assisted with the unload and distribution of crowd control barriers across the closed bridge, as well as supporting the delivery and installation of scenic elements, including stage flats, props and other set pieces.

The team also helped to lay AstroTurf over the steel deck cricket pitch, creating the look and feel of a real playing surface in one of London’s most recognisable locations. Additional crew supported the setup of practice nets, signage and staircase platforms, working closely with the carpentry team and other suppliers to ensure the site was ready for the live event.

With broadcasters on site throughout the day, several Showforce crew remained in position for the full 12-hour call, supporting show movements and helping to move podiums on and off stage during the live shows.

Following the event, the de-rig had to be completed at pace, with everything cleared from the road by 7pm so Waterloo Bridge could reopen to traffic. The operation called for, speed and teamwork, with our crew delivering under significant time pressure.

The Women’s ICC T20 World Cup begins on Friday, with hosts England playing Sri Lanka in the opening match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The tournament will run for 24 days across seven grounds in England, with 33 matches taking place before the final at Lord’s on 5 July.

This year’s competition is the biggest edition to date, expanding from 10 teams to 12 for the first time, with the Netherlands making their tournament debut. New Zealand arrive as defending champions after beating South Africa in the 2024 final.
