AFC ASIAN CUP OPENING CEREMONY

Organisers of the AFC Asian Cup promised a once in a lifetime experience to mark the start of the tournament’s 17th edition. Held at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday 5th January, thousands of fans in the stadium and millions of viewers around the world were witness to a breath-taking live show.

The night itself was one to remember for the cast and crew of the musical Hamilton, which walked away with no less than seven awards. Showforce was thrilled to see Hamilton do so well, especially since the team assisted with the renovation of Victoria Theatre in preparation for the arrival of Hamilton back in November.

Highly experienced in theatre work, Showforce was a natural choice to support long standing client, Limited Edition with the challenge of readying the Royal Albert Hall for the prestigious Olivier Awards.

The Showforce crew assisted with everything from unloading trucks containing lighting and staging equipment, to erecting pop up tents in and around the venue. Showing a tireless commitment to ensuring the show went ahead as planned, a team of 20 crew worked over two days on a wide range of tasks including building, rigging, lighting and staging.

Showforce was on-hand to support client Blink with several elements of the spectacular from placing and removing a huge pitch covering to providing a props team who helped to prepare all the props and assist with the falcons and artists during rehearsals and the show day.

The stand out element of the project was covering the pitch for the ceremony, ensuring it was stretched out ready for the props and performers to commence the show and then removing it within an incredibly tight window. There was a large triangular section that had to be removed within just 20 seconds during the show itself, to allow space for the players from each team to line up ready for the cameras. Once the show ended, the Showforce team had four minutes to perfectly fold and remove the cover altogether. To get this absolutely right a team of 120 crew planned and practised placing and removing the pitch cover meticulously. On the night the crew completed the task with six seconds to spare.
